Know Your Fish Food

In order to know what imitations to use when fly fishing the first thing you have to know is what the real insects look like and which ones are available to the trout. To find this out all you half to do is flip over a rock and see what bugs are there. Once you know what's in your river, you can increase your fishing success by accurately imitating the insects by size, shape and color (in that order). The second most important thing is presentation. Your presentation is worthless if you are presenting a fly that is not available to the fish. The best way to learn how to present a fly is to know how the actual insect acts, then use a technique that will make your fly act like the natural.

What we've attempted to do is to pick out the more common trout foods in the Arkansas River and other Colorado waters, as well as to provide you with the tools to best portray the local insects and their behavior.

After all, most of the fun in fly fishing is fooling the fish, with a better imitation and presentation, you will catch more fish!
