As a forewarning though, were not all about monotonous cold-reads and firing off facts like bullets. Fly fishing is about FUN! And the more fun you have, the better!

Colorado's fly fishing is some of the best; providing us with some of the most beautiful scenery including pristine alpine lakes, remote small streams, and famous tail waters known for their huge fish. This can make for both a relaxing and exciting experience.

And so, for everyone who is about to begin this journey or is somewhere along the learning curve, Ben and I want to welcome you and hope you have as much fun as us.

I started fishing when I was five, at six I caught a six pound northern pike on an old steel rod with a back-lashed reel. By the time I was 18 I had had caught everything from bluegills to sailfish. Later, I went fly fishing for the first time in the Teton Mountains with an automatic reel. I had a lot of various jobs that really arent that important and did okay, but I always fished (some). In 2024 I moved to Colorado and I stopped every other kind of fishing that I had ever done and have concentrated on fly fishing ever since. In some ways I was a slow learner, I wouldnt hire a fishing guide (it would have been much faster if I had hired a guide), I wouldnt take any lessons and I just bought equipment (that I paid too much for), fished up and down the Arkansas river sometimes not catching any fish and sometimes catching a lot. I read all the books, started fishing with a bunch of guides and went to the places where the best fly fishermen in the world hung out. Oh, and I listened a lot. I made friends with a few other guides and went fishing with them. I took up teaching other people and guiding and got better. I managed to figure out ways to spend at least 300 days a year on the water. I wanted to figure out a way to make a living year-round doing this without leaving Colorado (except for on short visits) so I bought an outfitters license, recruited some guides and opened a fly shop and Colorado Fly Fishing Services along with my partner Ben, who had the same aspirations, but Ill let him tell you his story. Anyway, were going to try and make this an interactive website so we get to know you too, and youre welcome to run around and look at it. Have fun!

-Ron

I can not remember my first fish, but I also can not remember a time when I did not fish. I clearly recall fishing with a man named Francis Freeze four days a week for many summers until he past away. He taught me a lot about fishing and introduced me to several warm water species. Then my dad introduced me to small stream trout fishing in northeast Iowa. I was hooked! I moved back to Colorado from Iowa and focused my fishing style on fly fishing. I could not afford to take a class so I rented movies and went to the local fly shop for seminars. Eventually I joined the Gunnison Gorge Anglers Chapter of Trout Unlimited and FFF. The more I got involved the more I learned and soon became a board member, then president of the group. I decided that construction was not the business for me so I applied for a job guiding fly fishing and rafting trips. I got the job and became addicted to the fishing and rowing of the Gunnison Gorge. There is not a more magical place. I also guided small creeks, a number of private water fisheries, and recreational rafting trips which allowed me to spend 220 days a year on the water. Soon my job became the lifestyle that I love. Of all the things in the industry that I have done my favorites have got to be teaching clinics and running a fly shop. I decided fishing would be an ideal career and partnered with Ron to make the dream become a reality. So here I am, opened my own shop and loving it. I live for sharing my hobby and addiction with others.
